The Mother is written by Maksim Gorki in 1906. Also the author won Nobel Literature Prize with this book in 1938. This book is about the poverty that dominates the russian proletariat before the october revolution in 1917.
Pelage is a woman that lives with his son called “Pavel” after his husband , who was an alcoholic and beated her, dies. Pavel is a young man and a worker. Because of that, he becomes a part of fights, he drinks depressively and acts rudely to her. After all, Pelage realises that Pavel has started to change. His behaviors are becoming mature day by day, he starts to bring books to home. Pavel starts to read all the time. For this reason, Pelage becomes curious about his son and what happens to him. After a while, Pelage learns that Pavel has become a part of socialist movements and a radical defient of proletariat rights.
Pavel starts to have ideological meetings at home with some friends that are unknown for Pelage. They talk about char, the country and ploretariat all around the world. They use some words that Pelage doesn’t understand so she bewares to discuss them. Moreover, she sees that how her son changed into a different person and be proud of him secretly.
Pelage gets rid of her timidity in time. She starts to serve food and tea to them, she learns their lifestories and becomes a part of disscussions. Above all, she starts to believe them and feel herself very near to their thoughts.
She sets her heart and mind on socialism too and helps her son to organise workers in his factory. She gains an important place in worker’s heart. By the time, 1905 Revolution erupts. Pelage, continues his organisation works in rural places of country. She concentrates on mujiks that are really far away from ideologic adequateness.
After all, Pelage moves to Nikolay’s house who is a friend of Pavel and a young, socialist man. She follows his son’s courts and works for revolution. At this point, we see that Pelage becomes a important piece of movement, not only a mother that listens instructions that her son gives. She moves independently and freely, she walks into hearts of downtrodden classes and communities, now she is the mother of the movement.
The mother is a good example of how humanistic virtues affects people. Russian Revolution is a model for downtrodden classes and communities and also an oath to new world and utopia about the great revolutionist rebellion.
